Founded in 1970 by Prof. Morteza Anvari, Sharif Language Center was originally aimed at expanding and promoting the students’ knowledge of foreign languages. Therefore, the center has been responsible for offering English Language courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Students usually take a total of 3 to 5 credit hours of English (depending on their major and level). These courses include both general and technical English. In 2008, the mission and academic activities of the center were re-evaluated and enhanced by Prof. Ali Meghdari to the level of a Languages and Linguistics Center.
Sharif Languages and Linguistics Center is committed to excellence in teaching and scholarship that prepares students to fully understand the nature, importance and multiple roles of language, literature, and culture. Currently, we offer undergraduate minors in English and Persian languages and literature to Sharif students, as well as Master degree programs in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and Computational Linguistics (CL). In addition, we approximately serve and teach English and Persian languages to over 1200 undergraduate and about 200 graduate students studying science and engineering, per year.
We look forward to continuing the expansion in the coming years. Hence, we plan to offer a master degree program in Persian Language and Literature in the near future, and gradually transform the Language Center activities into the Department of Languages and Linguistics. Recent faculty and staff appointments, new postgraduate and undergraduate minors, and brand new laboratories have placed the Sharif University of Technology’s Language Center at the forefront of language centers in the country.
